Trichinopoly (known as Tiruchirappalli today) is less than 350 kilometres from Madras.
Under the British East India Company and later, British colonial administration, its silversmiths
developed a unique style that incorporated the 'swami' style figures of Madras silver with finely engraved birds and animalson a background of dense and finely worked flowers and foliage.
The silver and gold items produced in Trichinopoly tended to be high quality small and luxurious items such as snuff boxes and perfume bottles.
