The Claret Jug Collection
...dedicated to the memory of my father...
Date: 25.08.2010
The name "Claret" has a French origin and means "bright" or "clear" and refers to a bright French Bordeaux wine.
In the 18th century there flourished a wide production of silver mounted cruet stand bottles. They were sized from 15-18 cm, but no taller or larger bottle suitable to serve wine was manufactured! The first examples of "wine" bottles were made in the 1830s and among the first were those manufactured in London by Reilly & Storer.
Although glass was used for drinking vessels since the earliest times, only the 19th century saw the development of the "Claret Jug". Silversmiths began "modifying" glass decanters used in the 18th century by the addition of simple bands of silver and replacing glass stoppers with silver hinged lids.
In the second quarter of the century, silver handles and larger mounts were added, although, in most cases, the glass maintained "bottle" shape and restrained design.
From the middle of the century, old rules were abandoned and Claret Jugs became one of the preferred methods for artists to display their skill on the production of fabulous and often bizarre designs.
Claret Jugs were produced throughout Europe and, although France had a large production of fine silver and glass jugs, most of the diverse and often beautiful designs that we can now treasure are of British manufacture.
British Claret Jugs have a wonderful glass body and perfect silver decorated mounting, as do the Russian pieces, especially those made by Gratchev or Faberge, attaining the highest levels of quality.
French manufacturers, perhaps as a consequence of the great tradition existing in wine production in their country, displayed creations characterized by highly functional shapes The British silversmiths, less conditioned by the "culture" of wine, demonstrated broader creativity, stronger innovation and frivolous attitudes in their manufacture.
Since the 1850s, many of the leading British manufacturers were producing fabulous hand engraved glass bodies.Especially Stourbridge was the " hot spot ". Many bohemian engravers came to Stourbridge like Wilhelm Fritsche or Frederick Engelbert Kny and did stunning work of art. Thomas Webb " invented " the so calles " Rock Crystal Glass " - Fritsche was probably the best engraver in this area. But Stevens & Williams as well with Frederick F. Carder should be paid attention. Cameo glass - absolute world class products have been made here. As many of their factories were located in the north of the country, the majority of their silver mounts were hallmarked in London,Birmingham and Sheffield Assay Offices.
As the European "grand tour" was in great fashion among the "wealthy minority", the demand for more fanciful models grew and designers researched their inspiration in the styles found in Europe; from geometric Grecian patterns to classical scenes in the "romantic" style of contemporary French painters.
By the third quarter of the century, jugs of the most bizarre form were in great fashion and in many cases the glass bore little resemblance to the early "bottles". The mounts were often chased in perfect symmetry to the glass. Curiously, this was also the period characterized by some of the most delicate items and several prominent silversmiths created rare and unusual jugs in "naturalistic" form. Flowers, such as roses, crocuses and water lilies, were copied perfectly to silver mounts and glass decoration which then were assembled to perfection.
From 1875 the forerunners of the Art Nouveau period were experimenting with the re-discovered Japanese art and the Aesthetic period became hugely popular. In Germany and Austria the Art Nouveau period led to the production of Claret Jugs with wonderfully decorated glass bodies but also, and often, to plain body artifacts.
Claret Jugs became for the artist the perfect medium to reproduce the delicate forms used for centuries in the Far East. Butterflies and birds, but also plants and flowers, became a common engraving, often with the addition of other small subjects in Japanese taste (a delicately engraved fan was often added amidst birds and foliage).
The 1880s saw the start of the manufacture of the rarest jugs ever produced, in the form of animals, birds and fishes. These magnificent creations were made in very limited quantity and by a restricted number of silversmiths, presumably because they required the highest craftsmanship level to attend to their manufacture. The most stunning of these forms had the glass realistically cut and engraved to simulate the texture of the model in minute and intricate details (feathers of a duck or the hair of a monkey). At the end of the 19th century the production of these beautiful objects ceased for a variety of reasons. The vivacious market of exotic Victoriana was replaced by the austerity of the Edwardian period, and this, coupled with the high cost of producing fine glassware, marked the end of 75 years of fine design and beauty. From the 1920s no more remarkable Claret Jugs were produced.

John Samuel Hunt (for Hunt and Roskell)
Date/Time: 12.05.2010 10:33:32 AM
These rank amongst the finest claret jugs made during the reign of Queen Victoria. The prestigious firm of Hunt and Roskell evolved out of the most famous retail name in the history of English silver, Rundell, Bridge and Rundell. John Samuel Hunt was the nephew of Paul Storr , the most eminent silversmith employed by Rundell's and had worked with Storr as a chaser. Storr took him on as a partner in the new firm of Storr and Mortimer which kept the same name until Storr's retirement in 1838. The name was then changed to Mortimer & Hunt until 1843 when Mortimer retired. The firm then became Hunt and Roskell, the partners being John Samuel Hunt, his son John Hunt and Robert Roskell.

This firm of manufacturing silversmiths, established in 1865 according to their illustrated catalogues published in the 1920s, commenced trading under the style of William & Charles Edwards, the first marks being entered by William Edwards from 12 Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, EC, where they are listed until 1878 as working silversmiths. Thereafter, marks were entered from the same address, first by Thomas Edwards, followed by Charles Edwards. Afterwards trading under his own name, Charles Edwards moved to 2A Northampton Square, Clerkenwell, where from 1879 he is listed as a silversmith and again before 1884 to 8 Northampton Square, Clerkenwell EC. Continuing to trade under the style of Charles Edwards, the firm was subsequently taken over by Charles Albert Eldridge (1889-1968), who registered his own mark at Goldsmiths' Hallon 26th August 1924. In 1958 the business was converted into a limited liability company as C. Edwards Ltd but was sold and closed a couple of years later.

Date/Time: 10.01.2010 02:39:42 PM
History: John McMillin was the owner and captain of the river boat, The Silver Wave. He and his ship were instrumental in ending the blockade at Vicksburg. (See Sherman's autobiography, the Steele Bayou episode, wherein the good captain's name is misspelled.) After the war, Captain McMillin returned to his home Pittsburgh where he patented the first successful steam capstan. His fortune was made by suing those miscreants who failed to pay royalties. Fortune in hand, he married and produced two children. One, a daughter died in childhood. The other was the family heir, Albion Steele McMillin. The captain died of a heart attack in his late forties. It was then discovered that the son also suffered from a defective heart. For his health Albion was sent to the West Coast, traveled the world extensively and was renowned for his conversation (he hardly spoke but listened attentively while puffing his cigar). Albion married into the Bryce family (of Bryce Brothers now Lenox) and produced three daughters. The youngest was Emily Bryce McMillin Terry the late owner of the items! Then i bought it at Ebay and now it is in my collection - it is a great honour for me to have this jug in my collection !

The Royal Windermere Yacht Club is a private members club, situated at Fallbarrow Road, Bowness on Windermere, Cumbria, England.
The club originated in 1860 when it was known as the Windermere Sailing Club. The club started to organise yacht racing on Windermere, and introduced limits on size and handicapping for different types of yacht. Prior to this, yacht racing was organised on an 'ad hoc' basis; some yachts were enormous, such as one called Hebe which weighed in at 20 tons and could only navigate the narrows off Cockshot Point if it was on a dead run.
In 1887 Sir William Forwood acquired the Royal Warrant for the club. This was on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
